Caring for animals can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career. From working in kennels and catteries to pet shops, rescue centres or sanctuaries, there is a wide range of careers available on successful completion of your course. With access to an array of animal collections on campus you will gain the practical training you need to pursue a career in this exciting industry. Our state of the art animal husbandry school at Bicton College provides dedicated access to a huge range of animal species such as meerkats, coatis and lemurs.
We have a diverse array of qualified lecturers, each with their own specialisms to guide you throughout the duration of the course.
Set in the beautiful grounds of Bicton, we are able to make use of the range of facilities available such as the lake for bird watching surveys, as well as classroom facilities such as the fully equipped laboratories for dissections.
Our animals come first, almost 85% are rescued animals, and their welfare and needs come first. Our highly dedicated instructors and technicians will support learners with the day to day care of our range of species, which ranges from Lemurs and Marmosets, to our rare bred poultry.
Our purpose built Animal Husbandry School offers large practical rooms, each with their own specialty of animals. Bicton prides itself on its high quality of care for the animals, and ensuring that our students skill set are prepped ready to work within the animal care industry, facilitated by our experienced staff who bring their knowledge of the industry into the classroom environment.

Gain a sound understanding of issues surrounding animal health, disease, behaviour, welfare and the management of animal collections. Making use of our excellent practical facilities and links with Dartmoor Zoological Park and various veterinary practices across Cornwall and Devon, we can ensure that you have excellent access to hands-on experience and the benefit of up-to-date veterinary knowledge.
Aspects of animal health and management are studied through a range of inter-related modules, giving you a solid grounding in this specialist area. Study tours in Year 1 and Year 2 will allow you to further your knowledge and experiences both nationally and internationally. You will have amazing opportunities to develop your knowledge of health, welfare and husbandry, and to work with a wide range of species within our Animal Management Centre.
